The Coastal community of Encinitas, California is known for surfing, and also for its trees. Home to the San Diego Botanic Garden and Meditation Gardens at the Self Realization Fellowship, Encinitas is destination #1 for horticultural enthusiasts throughout San Diego County. The name “Encinitas” even refers to a species of tree: the coast scrub oak or Quercus berberidifolia.

Would you hire a Mazda specialist to look at your Subaru? They’re both cars, right? How different could they be? Ask the same question about Tree Care: Isn’t it wise to hire a specialist who isn’t just knowledgeable, but knowledgeable of the area and its unique concerns?

Encinitas is comprised of five “communities”, each of which is unique when it comes to soil composition, elevation, and proximity to marine layer humidity. Take Crest drive for example—the dividing line between “old” and “new” Encinitas, and the location of Oakcrest middle school. Ever wonder why it’s called that? Look at this aerial photo (below) from 1936—before the area had any lanscaping—and you’ll see why: there was a time when there were oaks up there (still are, but not as many), but notice there are none at the lower elevations. This is how abrupt the transitions between bio-zones can be.
